The most eclectic custom contest is welcoming enlightened amateurs and professionals to reveal their latest master piece to the world!
For this new edition, Wheels and Waves will choose 10 original custom motorbikes, without restriction of style or era, to be exhibited in the heart of the Village during the festival. Awaited by the public, the Backyard Project is a unique showcase of the current custom scene, to which everyone can contribute. The winner of the contest will have the opportunity to showcase his or her bike at Artride 2023.

The Backyard Project is a custom motorbike design contest open to all, amateurs and professionals. This contest is aimed to reveal creativity and know-how of rookies or confirmed talents, without restriction of style. Heat engine or electric, vintage or modern motorbike, bobber, chopper, cafe racer, scrambler or anything else… the only thing that will be evaluated is the enhancement of the mechanics and its harmony with the overall design of the bike. The selected bikes will be new projects, unveiled for the first time to the public and professionals during WW2022.
The selected motorbikes will be exhibited throughout the festival in a dedicated area made offered to their creators at the Cité de l’océan Village.
The awarded project will be exhibited at Artride 2023.
10 projects will be selected. Send your application to the following email address backyardproject@wheels-and-waves.com, before April 4th 2022, with a presentation of your universe (workshop, collective, motorbikes and/or other creations already made, sketches, photos, blog, Instagram…) and the philosophy of the project made for WW2022. The motorbike must be “wrapped up” and ready to ride before June 6th 2022. The selected competitors will be informed by email of their participation.
To encourage exchanges with visitors, the motorbike must be permanently displayed in the Village. A Wheels and Waves military tent of 10 sqm (5.4m X 2m) will be made offered to each project, to be freely customized, according to the universe of the motorbike showcased and aesthetics of the Village: Only “raw” and “natural” materials (metal, canvas, wood, plants, etc.), no plastics, banners, PVC, etc. Lighting is provided.
Following the cancellation of the event in 2021, the “Showcasing the project in another event before the first day of WW is prohibited” rule is exceptionally lifted this year in order to give a chance to all projects completed in the last two years to attend the contest.
A 5 personalities jury representative of the Wheels and Waves universe – guests, journalists, designers, surfers, photographers… – will choose the winner of the Backyard Project 2022. The visit of the jury members will be anonymous during the 3 first days of the event. The winning project will be unveiled on Sunday 3 July on Village main stage.
For the first time, visitors will be able to vote for their favourite bike on Instagram.
